New Beginnings, Five Percent at a Time
As we get ready to launch Five Percent Capacity Apparel on November 1, I’ve been thinking about what it means to begin again.
There’s excitement in seeing something you’ve worked on become real. There’s also uncertainty in putting something deeply personal out into the world, knowing people will see part of your story along with it.
This brand carries a lot of mine.
Living with PTSD has changed my capacity for everyday life. Things that once felt manageable can take an enormous amount of energy. Being around people, dealing with stress, getting through a rough night and facing the next morning—it all adds up.
That is where Five Percent Capacity began. The name came from a very real place: having so little left to give and trying to figure out how to keep going with what remained.
Now, that experience has become the starting point for something I care about deeply.
Beginning with what I have
I wish I could say that launching this brand means everything has fallen into place. I still live with PTSD. The difficult days are still part of my life, and building something meaningful happens alongside them.
I’m learning to allow room for both.
There can be anxiety about what comes next and a reason to look forward to it. There can be exhaustion and an idea worth returning to when some energy comes back. Progress can happen slowly, with breaks, changed plans, and days when very little gets done.
That has shaped what this new beginning means to me. I’m starting with the capacity I have today.
What I hope we can build
My years in policing brought me close to experiences that stay with a person. They also showed me how much people can carry without those around them knowing.
That is why the words “Not Every Battle Is Visible” matter so much to me.
Through Five Percent Capacity, I want to help make those experiences easier to talk about. I want first responders, their families, and others living with unseen struggles to feel welcome here. I hope someone recognizes a piece of their own experience in this journal or in the message behind a design.
The apparel gives us a way to carry that message into everyday life. My hope is that it starts conversations and helps people feel a little less alone.
Looking ahead
November 1 marks the opening of the store and a new chapter in a story I’m still living.
There is plenty to learn. I’m proud to have reached this point, and grateful to everyone who has offered encouragement, followed along, or connected with what Five Percent Capacity stands for.
If you’re facing a new beginning of your own, I hope you can give yourself room to take it at your pace. You’re allowed to bring uncertainty with you. You’re allowed to need support.
I’m bringing both into this next chapter.
Thank you for being here as it begins.
